J. Focht: Der Wiener Kontrabass Hardback, 338pp. US$ 78.00 This German-language textbook (without photos) is a PhD musicological dissertation on the double bass in Vienna from the late 1600's to the mid-1800's. It centers on a commented catalogue of the music written for double bass by composers who either lived and worked in Vienna or who originated there. Further chapters cover developments and changes in tuning practices, playing technique, questions of orchestral practice and an overview of famous double-bass soloists. Most interesting for violin makers are the book's last 80 pages, which deal with double-bass building in Vienna from 1693 to 1870. Influences from Italy, Füssen, Tyrol, Bohemia and Hungary are considered, along with string materials and bow styles. The book closes with a 30-page overview of Vienna double-bass builders of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Text in German only.
